The most Tony and Broadway.com Audience Awards-nominated show of the year, Kinky Boots, is eyeing a London run, according to The Daily Mail. Tony-nominated director Jerry Mitchell said he would love to find British actors to play the lead roles of Lola and Charlie, but if casting Brits proved difficult, current Broadway Tony nominees Billy Porter and Stark Sands would open the West End production. No word yet on when Kinky Boots would open overseas or at what theater, though The Mail says it might be a Cameron Mackintosh house.
Based on the 2005 film and inspired by a true story, Kinky Boots follows Charlie Price (Sands), an aspiring young businessman who, after the death of his father, is forced to give up his dreams of living in London in order to save his family’s fledgling shoe factory in Northern England. Charlie finds inspiration in Lola (Porter), a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. As the unlikely pair works to turn the factory around, they find they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible. Kinky Boots co-stars Annaleigh Ashford and Celina Carvajal.
Kinky Boots opened on Broadway on April 4 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. It picked up 13 Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Direction, Best Actor (for both Porter and Sands), Best Featured Actress and Best Score.
